Not every wedding photoshoot becomes a story worth telling.

Some weddings are remembered because of the venue.

Others because of the decorations.

But every once in a while, I meet a couple who make the entire experience unforgettable.

This wedding photoshoot in Istanbul is one I’ll always remember.

The couple came from Lebanon and had been living in the United States for several years. They chose Istanbul to celebrate one of the most important chapters of their lives, surrounded by history, beautiful views, and the people they love.

From the very first minute, they were incredibly warm, relaxed, and excited. The bride wore a hijab, and every time I showed them a few photographs on the back of my camera, they smiled, looked at each other, and immediately asked,

“Where are we going next?”

That excitement reminded me why I love photographing destination weddings.

For them, it wasn’t simply about creating beautiful photographs.

It was about experiencing Istanbul together before beginning a completely new chapter of their lives.

Our journey lasted two unforgettable days.

The first day was dedicated to exploring some of my favorite photography locations across Istanbul, while the second day was all about their wedding celebration beside the Bosphorus.

Day One – Exploring Istanbul Before the Wedding

Whenever I photograph a destination wedding, I never think of it as simply moving from one location to another.

Instead, I try to create a journey.

Every place should feel different.

Every stop should reveal another side of Istanbul.

Rather than rushing through famous landmarks, I prefer spending enough time in each location so couples can relax, forget about the camera, and simply enjoy the experience together.

Normally, we spend around 40 minutes at each outdoor location.

That gives us enough time to create natural portraits without ever feeling rushed.

Our rooftop session usually lasts around 20 minutes, followed by approximately 10 minutes inside the famous Lamp Room, where we finish the day with portraits that have a completely different atmosphere.

By the end of the first day, couples usually stop thinking about photography altogether.

Instead, they’re simply enjoying one of the best days of their lives.

Ortaköy

We began our journey in Ortaköy.

If someone asked me where a wedding story should begin in Istanbul, Ortaköy would almost always be one of my first recommendations.

The Bosphorus Bridge, the waterfront promenade, the historic mosque, and the relaxed atmosphere make it one of the most romantic neighborhoods in the city.

The beginning of every photoshoot is usually when couples feel the most nervous.

They’re wondering how to stand.

Where to look.

Whether they’re smiling naturally.

But Ortaköy has a wonderful way of making all those worries disappear.

Within only a few minutes, they completely forgot about posing.

Instead of looking at my camera, they looked at each other.

Instead of following directions, they simply enjoyed walking beside the Bosphorus together.

Those genuine moments became some of my favorite photographs from the entire wedding story.

Seven Hills Restaurant – Hagia Sophia View

From Ortaköy we continued into the historic heart of Istanbul.

Our next destination was the famous Seven Hills Restaurant.

I’ve photographed here many times, yet the view never becomes ordinary.

Standing on the rooftop terrace with Hagia Sophia rising behind the couple creates photographs that instantly feel timeless.

Whenever couples arrive here for the first time, something interesting happens.

Almost everyone pauses for a few seconds.

Not because I’m taking photographs.

Simply because they’re trying to absorb the incredible view surrounding them.

Historic domes.

Flying seagulls.

Soft light on an overcast early morning.

Everything comes together naturally.

Sometimes Istanbul does half of my job for me.

Seven Hills Restaurant – Blue Mosque View

One of the things I love most about Seven Hills is its versatility.

Without leaving the rooftop terrace, we simply changed direction and suddenly found ourselves facing another masterpiece of Istanbul.

The Blue Mosque.

Although we were standing only a few meters away from our previous photographs, the entire atmosphere changed.

Different architecture.

Different light.

Different mood.

It almost felt like visiting a completely new location.

The couple loved discovering how quickly the scenery changed, and every new background made them even more excited for the next stop in our journey.

Süleymaniye Mosque

Our next stop was Süleymaniye Mosque.

Compared to the lively streets around Sultanahmet, everything suddenly became quieter.

The narrow stone streets, centuries-old houses, and breathtaking views overlooking the Golden Horn create an atmosphere that’s difficult to describe until you experience it yourself.

This is one of those places where I rarely ask couples to pose.

Instead, I simply ask them to walk together.

Talk to each other.

Hold hands.

Forget that I’m even carrying a camera.

Some of the strongest wedding photographs aren’t carefully directed.

They’re simply real moments between two people.

As we wandered through the peaceful streets surrounding the mosque, the city almost felt frozen in time.

Every corner offered another beautiful background.

Historic walls.

Old wooden houses.

Small cafés.

Hidden streets.

Unlike many famous tourist attractions, Süleymaniye allows couples to slow down and truly enjoy the experience without constantly being surrounded by crowds.

For me, that’s what makes this neighborhood so special.

It isn’t only beautiful.

It feels authentic.

Rooftop Experience

As the afternoon continued, we arrived at one of my favorite locations in the entire city.

A private rooftop overlooking Istanbul.

If I had to recommend only one location for wedding photography in Istanbul, this would almost certainly be my first choice.

Standing above the city, surrounded by historic skylines, mosque domes, and endless panoramic views, creates a feeling that’s impossible to recreate anywhere else.

By this point, the couple had completely forgotten about the camera.

There were no more nervous smiles.

No awkward poses.

Only genuine laughter and excitement.

That’s always my goal.

Not to create perfect photographs.

But to preserve real emotions.

A private rooftop also offers something that’s surprisingly rare in Istanbul.

Privacy.

Away from busy streets and large crowds, couples can simply enjoy each other’s company while taking in one of the most spectacular views in the city.

Every rooftop session feels slightly different because the light, the weather, and even the birds flying above the skyline constantly change.

No two sunsets are ever the same.

And that’s exactly what makes every gallery unique.

The Lamp Room

To finish the first day, we moved into the famous Lamp Room.

After spending hours outdoors, stepping inside felt like entering another world.

Warm light replaced the afternoon sun.

Hundreds of colorful Turkish lamps filled the room with rich colors and beautiful reflections.

I always enjoy ending a photography day here because it creates a completely different mood.

Instead of wide panoramic views, every photograph becomes more intimate.

The focus shifts entirely toward the couple.

Their expressions.

Their connection.

Their quiet moments together.

When couples receive their final gallery, I want every chapter of the day to feel different.

The Lamp Room provides the perfect ending to an unforgettable first day in Istanbul.

  • • Seven Hills – Blue Mosque View

  • Day Two

  • • Sunset Couple Portrait Session

By the time we finished the first day, we had photographed across six completely different locations and captured thousands of images.

Every location added another chapter to their story.

But the most emotional part of the journey was still waiting for us.

The following day wasn’t about exploring Istanbul anymore.

It was about celebrating love, family, and the beginning of a new life together.

Day Two – A Wedding Beside the Bosphorus

The second day felt completely different.

There was no rush to move between locations.

No sightseeing.

No city tour.

This was the day they had both been waiting for.

The wedding ceremony took place at a beautiful venue overlooking the Bosphorus, where family and close friends had gathered to celebrate with them.

Around fifty guests traveled to Istanbul to share this special day.

As everyone arrived, the atmosphere slowly transformed from quiet anticipation into genuine celebration.

One of my favorite memories from that evening wasn’t actually a photograph.

It was the music.

A traditional Lebanese band performed throughout the ceremony, filling the venue with songs that brought everyone together.

I didn’t understand every lyric, but I didn’t need to.

The smiles, the dancing, and the emotions told the whole story.

It was one of those rare moments where you realize that love speaks every language.

Photographing Real Moments

Unlike the first day, there was almost no directing during the ceremony.

My role changed completely.

Instead of creating portraits, I became an observer.

I quietly moved through the guests, capturing hugs, laughter, emotional glances between family members, children running around the venue, and the countless little moments that usually disappear before anyone notices them.

Those photographs often become the most valuable years later.

Because they weren’t planned.

They simply happened.

I always believe that wedding photography is about much more than photographing the bride and groom.

It’s also about preserving the people who were there to celebrate beside them.

Parents.

Friends.

Grandparents.

Brothers and sisters.

Years later, those faces often become just as important as the ceremony itself.

Sunset Beside the Bosphorus

As the celebration continued, sunset slowly approached.

Golden light spread across the Bosphorus, and for a few quiet minutes we stepped away from the guests.

No elaborate setup.

No complicated posing.

Just the two of them, enjoying the first sunset of their new life together.

Sometimes the simplest photographs become the strongest.

The ceremony had ended.

The excitement had settled.

There was nothing left except two people enjoying a peaceful moment together while Istanbul glowed behind them.

Those portraits became some of my favorite images from the entire wedding.

Not because of the location.

Not because of the light.

But because everything felt completely real.

More Than Just Beautiful Photographs

I’ve photographed couples from many different countries over the years.

Every wedding is different.

Every story is unique.

But this one reminded me of something I often forget while working.

Beautiful photographs aren’t created by famous locations.

They’re created by genuine emotions.

Istanbul simply becomes the stage where those memories unfold.

The city gives us breathtaking views.

Historic architecture.

Beautiful sunsets.

But the real story always belongs to the people standing in front of the camera.

This couple arrived in Istanbul to celebrate their wedding.

They left with thousands of photographs.

I hope that years from now, those photographs won’t simply remind them of how beautiful Istanbul was.

I hope they’ll remind them of exactly how they felt.

Because that’s what wedding photography is really about.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many locations can we visit during a wedding photoshoot?

For a full-day session, I usually recommend between four and six locations. This gives us enough variety without feeling rushed and allows time to enjoy each place naturally.

Do you help us plan the photography route?

Yes. Before the wedding, I’ll help you choose the best locations based on your schedule, preferred style, dress, transportation, and the lighting throughout the day.

Can you photograph both the city portraits and the wedding ceremony?

Absolutely. Many couples choose to combine a pre-wedding or city photoshoot with full wedding coverage over one or two days.

What happens if the weather changes?

I always prepare a backup plan. Depending on the weather, we can adjust the schedule, change locations, or simply wait for better light. Istanbul often surprises us with beautiful skies after the rain.

How far in advance should we book?

For spring, summer, and autumn weekends, I recommend booking as early as possible. Popular dates are often reserved several months in advance.
